Improving the appearance of scars through Plastic Surgery techniques

Scars are the natural result of the healing process after trauma, surgical interventions or other skin lesions. In certain situations, they may remain visible, widened, retractile or unaesthetic, influencing the appearance and the contour of the affected area.

Surgical scar revision aims to improve their appearance and to obtain a scar that is as discreet as possible and better integrated into the surrounding tissues.

At Maison Longévité, surgical revision with local anesthesia is performed for scars that can be treated on an outpatient basis. The indication is established individually, following the Plastic Surgery consultation, depending on the characteristics of the scar and on the complexity of the intervention required.

It is important to know that a scar cannot be completely eliminated. The purpose of the intervention is to reduce its visibility and to create favorable conditions for an improved aesthetic appearance.

Who is it for?

Surgical revision may be considered in the case of:

The indication depends on the type, size, location and age of the scar, on the quality of the tissues and on the individual particularities of the healing process.

How does the procedure unfold?

The procedure is performed with local anesthesia, on an outpatient basis.

Depending on the particularities of the scar, the surgeon may excise the scar tissue and re-perform the closure of the wound using Plastic Surgery techniques adapted to the treated area.

The purpose is to obtain a final scar that is more discreet and better integrated into the natural appearance of the area.

The technique is chosen individually, taking into account the orientation and size of the scar, its location, the tension of the tissues and the anatomy of the region.

What is the recovery like?

Recovery differs depending on the treated area and on the extent of the intervention.

During the first days, sensitivity, a sensation of tension, mild edema or local bruising may appear, and these decrease progressively.

If sutures that require removal are used, the moment of their removal is established by the surgeon depending on the treated area and on the progress of healing.

Intense physical activity and movements that exert tension on the operated area may be temporarily limited, according to the physician's recommendations.

Care after the procedure

Correct care of the operated area is important for the evolution of the scar.

Depending on the case, the postoperative recommendations may include:

The patient receives individualized postoperative recommendations and is scheduled for a follow-up of the evolution and of the healing process.

When is the result visible?

The healing and remodeling of a scar is a gradual process.

In the initial period, the new scar may be more visible, and its appearance changes progressively over the following months, as the scar tissue matures.

The final result cannot be assessed immediately, because the maturation of the scar requires time and differs from one person to another.

Does the scar disappear completely?

No. No intervention can completely eliminate a scar.

The objective of surgical revision is for it to become less visible and better integrated into the appearance and contour of the area, within the limits determined by anatomy and by the individual healing response.

Is a consultation necessary before the procedure?

Yes. The Plastic Surgery consultation is necessary for assessing the scar and establishing the indication.

Not all scars require or benefit from surgical revision. Depending on the characteristics of the scar, the surgeon establishes whether it can be treated with local anesthesia, on an outpatient basis, or whether a different therapeutic approach is necessary.

Surgical scar revision is performed by a specialist/senior consultant physician in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Microsurgery.

The results and the healing process may vary from one person to another.
